Nut Graf

A nut graf is basically the story in "a nutshell". It helps the reader know what the story is about, telling them why they should care. Once you get to the nut graf, you can choose whether or not to keep reading; if you stop you'd still know what the story is essentially about.

The hard part about writing the nut graf isn't just capturing the essence of the story, it's encouraging readers to keep reading. Many professionals struggle with this in their writing, but a good nut graf is essential to their story. It helps readers see why the story is important and serves as a transition from the intro into the rest of the story.
